Top 10 things undergraduate students need to know about the CUPE 3906, Unit 1, strike
1. McMaster will remain open during the strike
The campus will remain open and services and supports for students will be available. Picket lines are expected at the main entrances to campus.? Please leave plenty of extra time to get to campus.
2. Most classes will continue as planned during the strike
Students will be notified by their instructors with as much advance notice as possible if there are changes to their class location or to logistics. Please check for course-specific updates on Avenue to Learn.
3. Student health and wellness services will continue to be available
The Student Wellness Centre will continue to offer its normal services, including counselling and student supports.
4. The libraries will stay open
Campus library services will continue to be available during normal operating hours.
5. Students are expected to submit assignments, take tests and exams and meet deadlines
Students will be contacted by their course instructors with as much advance notice as possible if there are changes to the format of assignments, tests, exams or to deadlines. Look for more information on your course Avenue to Learn page or contact your instructor.
6. Exams will continue to be held
Assume that your exams will continue as planned unless you receive other information from your instructor through Avenue to Learn and other communication platforms used in your course. It is a student’s responsibility to be aware of changes
7. Students need to meet course requirements
According to the Rights and Responsibilities of Undergraduate Students During Work Stoppages That Substantially Disrupt Academic Activities, undergraduate students who are either unable or choose not to participate in academic activities have a right to extended deadlines, make-up tests and assignments, reasonable alternative access to course materials, and/or other special arrangements as may be appropriate. In circumstances where the full extent of what has been missed to meet course requirements will only be known after the end of the strike, requests for accommodations will be considered at that point.
8. Be patient and polite when accessing campus through a picket line
During the strike, expect picket lines at some of the entry points to campus and anticipate significant delays. We thank our community members for respecting one another. The safety of everyone, including picketers, is paramount. We are one community and value everyone at McMaster.
9. Bus routes will change
HSR busses will not be coming onto campus and will pick up and drop off passenger at stops close to campus. See their website for details. GO Transit buses will not be accessing campus during the strike. Go buses will drop passengers off at designated stops just outside of campus. Please board GO Transit buses at the stop located at the corner of Main Street West and Emerson Street. Visit GO Transit’s webpage for real-time bus information. Expect delays on public transit.
